Dear Colette:

My Question is: In one year, I my lost original boss who was in his 80’s, and then he was replaced by two more new bosses. How do I make the new bosses understand that I know what I am doing? I think trust should go both ways.

Ms. Capable, but Frustrated

Answer:
Losing a boss who trusts your talent, skills and abilities and gaining two new individuals who are unsure of your numerous capabilities can make for a frustrating environment. Perhaps these supervisors haven't worked with someone as capable as you and gotten burned in the past. Once trust is broken (even if it's not directly with you) it can make others shy about relinquishing control.

The next time you feel micro-managed, gain clarity first and then ask for what you want. For example, "When you check up on specific details of this task, I can't help but feel that you're uncertain that I've followed through. Are you concerned that I'm going to forget something?" (Chances are they'll reassure you that is not the case or they'll have an opportunity to share what's happened in the past.) Then you might say, "I want to reassure you that I've worked on similar projects numerous times in the past. You can count on me to ask you directly if there is ever something I'm unclear on, and that I'd bring any concern to your attention. If need be, I could send emails to update you and keep you in the loop, but I would prefer that you give me the benefit of the doubt in the future. Is there anything else I could do to make you feel comfortable with this approach?"

Sometimes supervisors just need reassurance. Others need to realize how lack of trust can sour a relationship. Without being clear and direct, the issue will never get resolved.

Warmest wishes,
Colette
