American Society of Administrative Professionals (ASAP) Announces Education Partnership Program with Madison College

ASAP members will earn credits for prior learning through achieving the Professional Administrative Certification of Excellence (PACE) towards Madison College’s Associate of Science Degree in the Administrative Professional Program

Portland, ME: September 26, 2016 —A new partnership between the American Society of Administrative Professionals (ASAP) and Madison College was jointly announced at the 24th Annual Administrative Professionals Conference in Chicago last week. The partnership allows students who earn PACE Certification to receive credit for prior learning towards their Administrative Professional  or Medical Administrative Specialist  associate degree programs at Madison College.

“This agreement provides those who earn the PACE Certification the next step in their professional development and educational goals. The advanced standing credits will decrease the amount of time and money students spend on the degree,” explained Karen Jennings, program director at Madison College. “Online students can complete the program at their own pace.”

Madison College’s Administrative Professional program prepares students with the software/hardware, administrative and interpersonal skills needed for today’s technical office. This career pathway includes an Office Assistant technical diploma and a Microsoft Office technical diploma.

The PACE Certification was developed by the American Society of Administrative Professionals to meet increased demand within the admin community for a modern Certification program. The PACE Certification gives admins the credentials they need to demonstrate mastery of critical skills and expertise. Hundreds of admins from the US and global admin community have enrolled in PACE since its launch in February 2016.

“ASAP’s partnership with Madison College is a tremendous opportunity for our members,” said Judy Geller, Executive Director of ASAP. “It opens the door for ASAP members who are enrolled in PACE, or who have already earned their PACE, to apply their knowledge and PACE credential towards their Madison College degree program. They can work one-on-one with a Madison College faculty advisor, take courses from instructors with real-world experiences in the field, and join discussions with professionals from around the world in an academic setting.”

The long-term benefits to admin professionals in earning their PACE Certification and an accredited associates degree include increasing their earning potential, staying current with the newest technology trends, enhancing their professional image, and having access to tools and knowledge necessary to be competitive in the workforce.

PORTLAND, ME, April 16, 2014 - According to a report just released by the American Society of Administrative Professionals (ASAP), today’s administrative professional has evolved into a new breed of middle manager.

In addition to their traditional clerical roles, administrative professionals are shouldering more responsibility for project management, office tech front-line support, employee supervision, and budgets. This hybrid position, which relies heavily on technology, is redefining what it means to be a middle manager.

The report describes the shift from assistant to a managerial role as happening relatively quickly. In 2008, only 7 percent of attendees at ASAP’s Administrative Professionals Conference (APC) held non-traditional admin job titles; most were assistants. In 2013, more than 22 percent of APC attendees held titles like manager and project coordinator.

“We are no longer the 9-5, type-a-memo and answer-the-phone secretaries we once were known as. We are now the business partner to the executive and the teams we support in which most cases is assuming the role of project manager and chief of staff,” says Christopher Whibley, an executive assistant at Elsevier Inc., a provider of health and science information.

The drivers of change include management shake-ups from the Great Recession, growing use of technology and social media, and an improving economy in which companies seek more adaptable, versatile staff.

The report notes that the demand for multi-skilled, technology-proficient administrative professionals has consequently increased the need for training. ASAP research finds that although administrative professionals may have organizational support, training often falls to them. Attendance at the APC was self-initiated by 37 percent of administrative professionals; only 12 percent of admins attended the conference at the suggestion of their manager, HR, or training department.

ASAP is responding by ramping up their technology and management training at the APC, webinars, regional events, and online resources. It is launching ASAP Future Leaders Initiative, a customized professional development plan focusing on these new roles.

“Organizations need to see that they can stay lean while increasing quality and productivity by training administrative professionals for these middle management roles,” says Judy Geller, Director of ASAP and the APC. “We support assistants regardless of where they are in their careers, giving them the tools to be successful in a job that has evolved from shorthand and taking letters to a role that used to be reserved for middle level managers.”

ASAP, which was founded in 2005, has more than 45,000 members and grows by about 600 members per month. “We have a direct pipeline to thousands of administrative professionals working for a Who’s Who of organizations. They tell us what they need, and we work to deliver it.”

PORTLAND, ME, November 19, 2013 -- If administrative professionals and executive assistants ever feel like they are being thrown in with the sharks, the 2014 Administrative Professionals Conference (APC) and its keynoter, world-record long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad, can help them to navigate the difficult waters of their jobs.

Diana Nyad, the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a protective shark cage, will deliver the Premier Keynote address at the 2014 APC in the Washington D.C. area September 28-October 1, at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, MD.

In September 2013, at the age of 64, Nyad finally succeeded in completing the historic 110-mile swim she had attempted four other times, beginning at the age of 28. After the grueling 53-hour swim, she said, “I have three messages. One is we should never ever give up. Two is you are never too old to chase your dreams. And three is it looks like a solitary sport but it takes a team.”

In the 1970s, Nyad was the greatest long-distance swimmer in the world. Her world records, such as circling Manhattan Island and crossing the 102.5 miles between the Bahamas and Florida, have led to inductions into many Halls of Fame, such as the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame. Nyad became a prominent sports broadcaster and journalist, reporting for NPR, ABC’s Wide World of Sports, Fox Sports, and the New York Times. She has written three books.

“Diana embodies the spirit of determination so vital for success, and we are delighted to have her as our Premier Keynote,” said Judy Geller, Director of the APC. “APC attendees are professionals determined to succeed over the long haul. Together with the APC’s practical training sessions, Diana’s inspiring message will fortify them to take on whatever challenges they might face.”

In October 2013, Nyad continuously swam for 48 hours in New York City's Herald Square to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy. “The APC has pledged $5,000 to that relief fund in honor of Diana,” said Geller.
