No doubt about it — the workplace has radically changed. Organizations across the US have, by necessity, adopted new ways of working during the Covid-19 pandemic. But exactly how business will be conducted post-pandemic remains to be seen. We do know that developing new skills and building on current ones will be key!

Here are five post-pandemic skills most likely to help workers thrive when the world returns to a new normal.

Self-empowerment. In a world in transition, self-motivated employees will be the ones best positioned to drive their own and their organizations’ success. They should expect to have to adapt to quickly changing circumstances, unclear direction, and evolving roles. They’ll need to identify the skills and support necessary to move forward in their jobs and their careers.   

Tech expertise. Digital technology skills have fueled businesses—before and during the pandemic. Afterward, these skills will be even more important. Post-pandemic skills are bound to include all of the following: video conferencing, SEO, email, e-commerce, social media, web design, software development, coding, operating systems, computer maintenance … and many more.

Resilience. The ability to adapt a fast-changing workplace is essential. In a post-pandemic world, many of us will continue to work from home. We’ll need to be prepared for any and every contingency. Post-pandemic resilience will mean reframing expectations, dealing with discomfort—and handling a raft of unexpected challenges and responsibilities.

Empathy. It’s the ability to put oneself in another’s shoes while remaining calm and responding to challenging issues and personalities. You’ll need to be aware of your own emotions as well as those of coworkers, bosses, clients, and customers. Knowing what others are likely feeling as they face unprecedented changes will help you navigate the post-pandemic world of work.  

Communication. Post-pandemic skills will include every type of communication, from teleconferencing to chat, from text to phone calls, from email to social media. An ability to get across ideas clearly and concisely—online, on paper, and in person—a grasp of correct grammar, and the ability to keep calm while communicating in difficult situations will be essential.
