Project Management: Beyond the Basics

Build advanced project management skills for administrative professionals. Master flexible methodologies, cost control, team influence, and tools to deliver successful projects.

Administrative professionals are increasingly called upon to manage projects, coordinate teams, and deliver results, often without formal project management training or authority. Shifting priorities, tight budgets, competing personalities, and evolving technology can make success even more challenging.

This is an intermediate-level course. Participants should have a foundational understanding of project management concepts and experience coordinating or managing projects. No specialized software or technical expertise is required to participate.

Session 1: Understanding Agile Methodology: A More Flexible Approach to PM

Tuesday, December 1, 2026, 1-2:15pm ET

If you’ve ever struggled with rigid project expectations that don’t match shifting realities, this session is for you. Traditional project management methods can leave little room for change, but purely adaptive methods may feel too loose without the right framework. When you understand both methodologies, you’ll be equipped to choose, adapt, or blend strategies to suit your project’s unique needs. This session empowers you to manage evolving priorities without losing direction, making you a more effective and adaptive project leader.

In this session, you will learn how to:

  • Compare the core principles, strengths, and limitations of different project management approaches.
  • Identify real-world scenarios where each methodology works best and where they may fall short.
  • Implement a hybrid model that leverages structure and flexibility.
  • Use practical strategies to integrate flexible practices into your current project workflows.

A key factor in project success is staying on (or under) budget. If not properly managed, project costs can quickly and easily skyrocket out of control. If you’re not keeping a vigilant eye on spending, you could put your entire project at risk. Learning how to effectively manage the financial aspects of your projects will help increase your chances of success as a project manager and prepare you to confidently take on bigger, more complex, and higher profile projects in the future.

In this session, you will learn how to:

  • Accurately estimate costs and negotiate for the budget you need before the project even starts.
  • Monitor spend along the way and make appropriate adjustments to stay on track.
  • Communicate tactfully to push back on requests that cause negative financial consequences.
  • Manage company resources carefully and ethically.

Successful project management isn’t just about tasks and to-do lists. Much of the time, you have a team to wrangle as well. As an unofficial project manager (without the formal PM title), this can be especially difficult as you may lack direct authority over the individuals on whom you’re relying. As a result, you can’t impose consequences on team members for failure to do what’s asked of them. To be a successful project manager, you have to learn how to leverage your influence to direct your team, keep them focused, and inspire them to get things done.

In this session, you will learn how to:

  • Explore strategies to help establish your authority as project manager, even without the official title.
  • Leverage specific language to use (and not use) to communicate assignments clearly and confidently to anyone.
  • Understand how to help team members stay on track with their commitments and hold them accountable.
  • Discover tactics to keep stakeholder expectations in check so the project doesn’t grow unwieldy.
  • Understand how (and when) to escalate team issues to leadership.
