The Power of Proof: Leveraging Your Achievements to Advance Your EA Career

Confident admin professional

Many executive assistants excel at managing everyone and everything in the office. They juggle countless priorities without missing a beat. Yet when asked what they have accomplished, many struggle to articulate their value. Instead of highlighting impact, they list tasks completed and wonder why they feel overlooked or held back.

With a few intentional shifts, you can learn how to clearly communicate your contributions, position your achievements effectively, and leverage them to move your career forward.

The What

Can you clearly describe what you do?

Titles like “chaos tamer” may sound clever, but they say very little. Chaos looks different in every organization. Rather than relying on vague or gimmicky phrases, focus on qualifying and quantifying your work. A simple framework helps: I did X, in partnership with Y, which resulted in Z.

Is this easy? No.
Is every EA in a position where their work is easily measurable? Also no.

If you are not currently able to quantify your impact, look for opportunities to take on projects with measurable outcomes. Ask to be included in initiatives tied to performance goals, efficiency improvements, cost savings, or strategic priorities. These experiences give you concrete results you can use to advocate for yourself.

If you have never completed a self-audit, start there. Reviewing your resume and conducting a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) is a powerful way to identify patterns, gaps, and growth areas.

The Why

To advance, EAs must demonstrate that they are more than task executors. Measuring your work and aligning it with organizational goals and KPIs shows strategic thinking and business awareness. It also strengthens your position during salary and promotion conversations.

Today, raises and career progression are rarely automatic. Being able to prove your value through outcomes and metrics makes your case stronger, both in your current role and in future opportunities.

Skills vs. Technology

Understand the difference between tools and skills.

It is expected that EAs know platforms like Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, and other common software. These are tools, not differentiators.

Skills reflect what you can do with those tools. Are you strong in project management, data analysis, training, or process improvement? Do you bring emotional intelligence, relationship-building, or change management skills to your role?

These are the capabilities that set you apart. Value creates leverage.

Why They Should Hire You

Do you know why someone should hire you, promote you, or invest in your growth?

Ask peers, mentors, or leaders what stands out about your work and where they see your greatest strengths. Use that feedback to refine your narrative and clearly articulate your unique value proposition.

If the answer feels unclear or uncomfortable, do not be discouraged. Awareness is the first step. Once you know where the gaps are, you can intentionally work to close them.

You’ve Got This

This process can feel uncomfortable the first time you do it, but it is essential. A thoughtful self-audit allows you to recognize, articulate, and leverage your achievements.

You already bring value. Make sure others can see it.
